Ever read Inheritance by Harvey Whitehouse? I think you'd like it Alex. He's an Oxford anthropologist positing that the three main drivers of humanity have always (across all of history) been conformism, religiosity, and tribalism. Understanding that, and freeing oneself from it - or consciously choosing to conform - is a wonderful way to untether.
