Are you often distracted?
I know I've spent a lot of time in the void of distraction.
Between two worlds.
Finding an excuse to be here when I know the world depends on me being there.
There's no doubt it's becoming easier to be distracted.
They have hour-long sassy yelling huskies videos, for goodness sake.
It's also easy to berate ourselves for procrastinating.
But why do we allow ourselves to be distracted?
We do it because the perceived pain associated with a task overrides our enthusiasm for doing it.
We say, 'oh, fiddlesticks, I don't like this. I don't want to be here. I wanna go somewhere where it feels better.'
So we escape.
We go there.
So if the problem is that the pain of the thing exceeds our enthusiasm for doing it...
Enthusiasm is the secret.
Am I right, or am I right?
Even if it's manufactured.
This could start by listing out all the reasons you want to do the thing.
We need enthusiasm for doing things, even if it can feel uncomfortable.
Being enthusiastic about something doesn’t mean it needs to be comfortable.
We can be enthusiastic about a run in the rain because we know it benefits us at the macro level.
It will get our hearts beating and our blood flowing.
Fundamentally, it's about being OK with discomfort.
Because if we could find a way to enjoy the work, why would we allow distraction in?
We're too busy ENJOYING the damn thing.
Right?
So your answer lies here.
How to WANT to do what needs to be done?
How to enjoy the task, no matter what it is?
Is that even possible?
Are you willing to withstand some discomfort if the WANT is strong enough?
The resilient, creative, warrior part of you says YES.
They find a way.
They choose enthusiasm.
